There are many different techniques available for removing contaminants from your home’s tap water. One of the most effective of those techniques, especially when used in conjunction with other types of filters, is ozone treatment. Today we’re going to talk about what ozone water treatment is and why it is effective at purifying your home’s tap water!
What is ozone?
Ozone is a molecule made up of three oxygen atoms. It is produced naturally by the sun and can also be generated using ultraviolet lights.
What is ozone water treatment?
Ozone water treatment is a style of water purification that uses ozone to oxidize harmful contaminants and render them harmless. Because one of the oxygen atoms that make up ozone is loosely connected to the molecule, that oxygen atom can easily break off. When ozone comes into contact with a water contaminant, the loose-fitting oxygen atom breaks off and binds to the contaminant (a process known as oxidation), changing the contaminant’s chemical makeup and inactivating its harmful properties.
Unlike chemical disinfectants like chlorine, ozone does not create any residual tastes or smells in your water. In fact, after ozone treatment is finished, the ozone changes back to oxygen and leaves without a trace.
Ozone water treatment is very effective at removing all kinds of water contaminants, including:
- Microorganisms
- Chemicals
- Pesticides
- Organic matter
- Viruses
- Biological contaminants
- Metals like iron, sulfur and manganese
Why is ozone water treatment used in conjunction with other filters?
Although some contaminants are destroyed by ozone, others (particularly metals) are inactivated by ozone and turned into insoluble particles. Those particles still remain in your water, which is why many filtration system run water through some kind of sediment filter after the ozone filter has done its job.
Where can I buy an ozone water treatment system?
North Carolina Water Consultants offers a few different products that utilize ozone water treatment. The ProMate Iron Curtain water softener from Hellenbrand, for example, uses ozone treatment to remove contaminants like iron, manganese, sulfur bacteria and iron bacteria.
