Hard water can affect any fixture or surface that water comes into contact with in your home. Given the fact that faucets are the delivery points for water to your sinks, faucets are impacted by hard water just as much if not more than any other part of your home. Today we’re going to talk about how hard water can affect the appearance and performance of your home’s faucets and how installing a water softener can eliminate those problems!
How hard water affects your home’s faucets
- Causes ugly limescale buildup. Limescale is the crusty white substance that builds up on your home’s surfaces after prolonged exposure to hard water. It often builds up on the spouts of faucets where the water comes out, which can make them look dirty, corroded and older than they actually are.
- Reduces water pressure. Many faucets have tiny screens called aerators at their spouts that are used to conserve water while maintaining proper pressure. If your home has hard water, the minerals in the water can get caught in the aerator screens. This limits the amount of space that’s available for water to flow through the screens, which reduces the pressure of the water that comes out of the faucets.
- Causes water to spray in different directions. Another problem with minerals building up on faucet aerators is that it can cause water to spray out of your faucets in unexpected ways. Instead of flowing straight down, water might be misdirected and spray out sideways, possibly even on you! This can happen even if your faucets don’t have aerators because hardness minerals can build up inside the spouts themselves.
- Shortens the lifespan of faucets. Limescale corrodes your faucets, which can reduce their lifespan by quite a bit. Even if your faucets are working fine, limescale buildup can be very difficult to remove and you might be forced to replace your faucets prematurely simply for aesthetic reasons.
Install a water softener to protect your faucets from hard water
A water softener will remove hardness minerals from your tap water as soon as the water enters your home. As a result, every single faucet in your home will receive soft water that is free of the minerals that cause all of the problems listed above. By installing a water softener, your faucets will perform great, remain shiny and last much longer than they would if they were constantly exposed to hard water.
