“Water quality” is a term that can take on many different meanings depending on the context. Every time that you see a news article about issues with water quality in one of our nation’s towns (which are all too common), it could be referring to any number of things. As a dealer of water treatment products in North and South Carolina, we want to help you figure out how water quality relates to you. So today we’re going to provide you with a broad spectrum of answers to the question, “What is water quality?”
What is water quality?
Your home’s water quality depends on a number of different factors. It’s only by taking all of the following things into account that you can determine your home’s water quality:
- Hardness. No matter where your water comes from, it will contain a certain amount of hardness minerals. At high levels, these minerals will form limescale on your plumbing fixtures, clog your pipes, reduce the efficiency of your water heater and a cause a host of other problems in your home.
- Contaminant levels. Even though city water is treated by a plant, many different contaminants still make their way to our homes. In fact, chlorine is a dangerous disinfectant that’s added by your local treatment plant! In addition, if you get your water from a private well, removing contaminants is your responsibility. Some chemicals and contaminants can cause immediate health effects, while others can leave you and your family prone to serious illnesses after long-term exposure.
- Taste and smell. There are a number of water contaminants that can alter the taste and smell of your water. Even though some of these contaminants are relatively harmless to your health, they can still make your water unpalatable.
- pH levels. If the pH levels in your water are too low or too high, it can affect your health, corrode your plumbing system and/or alter the taste and smell of your water.
- Effects on your plumbing system. There are a number of different water quality issues that can affect the efficiency and effectiveness of your home’s plumbing system. Even if these issues don’t affect your health, they can lead to expensive repair costs and high utility bills.
