A water softener’s regeneration cycle is one of the most important phases in the softening process. The way that that the regeneration cycle works depends on the model of water softener that you have installed, but they all follow the same general steps. Today we’re going to talk about why a water softener’s regeneration cycle is necessary, how it works and the advantages of the regeneration cycle used by the Hague WaterMax!
What is the purpose of a water softener regeneration cycle?
At the beginning of a new water softening cycle, your water softener has a tank full of resin beads that all have sodium ions attached to them. As hard water enters the tank, those sodium ions are replaced by calcium and magnesium ions in order to remove those hardness minerals from your water. Eventually, most of the resin beads will be coated in calcium and magnesium and the beads will need to be washed free of them in order to continue to soften your water. That’s where the regeneration cycle comes in.
How does the water softener regeneration cycle work?
A water softener regeneration cycle starts by filling the system’s tank with a solution of salt and water known as brine. The brine has such a high concentration of salt that it overwhelms the resin beads with sodium ions, and the calcium and magnesium ions are removed from the beads. After this happens, the tank is flushed and the calcium and magnesium ions are drained out.
After the tank is flushed and rinsed with water, the resin beads will all have sodium ions attached to them once again and the softening process can start all over.
What are the advantages of the Hague WaterMax’s Absolute Brining process?
Most conventional water softeners use the same amount of salt during every regeneration cycle. This can be wasteful, because some regeneration cycles require less salt than others. The Hague WaterMax uses a process known as “Absolute Brining” that adjusts the salt dosage for every regeneration cycle. That means that the WaterMax only uses the exact amount of salt that’s required for each individual regeneration cycle.
